Oftentimes we get so caught up with mainstream brand that we don't take a look at the other handbag lines that are out there from indie designers and up-and-coming brands. Scabby Robot is a unique collection of handbags with modern designs in interesting shapes.

About Scabby Robot:

Scabby Robot is a one woman studio based in San Francisco, California. Designer Jill Harrell earned her BFA in Industrial Design from the California College of the Arts in 2003. Her passion for soft goods and one-off design led her to start her own line of handbags and accessories in 2006. Since then, she's been "doing donuts in the street with her 1958 Singer slant-o-matic sewing machine: making, selling, and grinning foolishly."

Where to Shop for Scabby Robot:

Visit the Scabby Robot website or the Scabby Robot Etsy Shop to learn more about these bags. Prices vary from $12 to $500, so you are sure to find something in your price range.

We had the opportunity to talk to Scabby Robot designer Jill Harrell about her handbag and the latest accessory trends.

What's your inspiration behind the designs?:

I'm in love with my materials. I make it a rule to only buy textiles I'm weak-in-the-knees for. Lately I've been all about gorgeous distressed leathers, bright suedes, and heavy denims. I let my forms be simple to highlight the materials they're crafted from. This combo leads to a lovely balance of casual and elegant, playful and purposeful.

What trends in handbags do you anticipate for the summer?:

Small accents of bright color, lots of pockets, leather leather leather.

If a woman can only afford one new bag this season, what style should it be?:

I'd say to go for the bag that wins your heart. Forget about what's practical and pick the bag that you want to caress and gaze at while you're sitting on the bus on your commute to work. Pick the bag that haunts your dreams because you'll use it without regret... even if it means being extra cautious to protect the white suede (or sequin and feather applique) from spilled drinks or grubby paws.

Any other tips for accessorizing with handbags that you'd like to provide?:

Pull things out of your closet from summers past, or better, go through your friends' closets and play, trade, experiment. Maybe that old clutch just needs those weird beaded dongles trimmed off?
