Isaac Mizrahi Biography:
Born in Brooklyn in 1961 of Syrian Jewish descent, Isaac Mizrahi had an early start in fashion. His dad was a children’s clothes manufacturer and his mother constantly encouraged the arts and artistic endeavors.
For high school he attended the Yeshivah of Flatbush High School of Performing Arts, where he began to develop his design abilities. Upon graduation he was accepted into New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design.
Isaac Mizrahi in Fashion:
In March 1981, Mizrahi started to work with design mogul Perry Ellis, where he enjoyed a particularly good apprenticeship. Mizrahi credits Ellis as a formative influence in his work. The following year the budding designer acquired employment with Calvin Klein, where he learned tailoring and eliminating at a hands-on level.
In 1986, when Mizrahi was 26 years of age, Bergdorf Goodman purchased his first line of clothing. The following year, the designer put on his first fashion show and began to gain the attention of fashion critics and magazine editors.
Isaac Mizrahi Achievements:
Mizrahi’s output has been referred to as nothing short of prolific. In 1989, not too long after beginning, the designer won the Perry Ellis Emerging Talent Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The following year the CFDA proceeded to name him the Designer of the Year.
The accolades and critical recognition was to continue throughout the 1990s. In 1996, Mizrahi received a special CFDA award for his documentary Unzipped, storying his life as a fashion designer. In 2001, the Oxygen channel capitalized upon his personable quality and inaugurated a talkshow called The Isaac Mizrahi Show.
