Anne Klein Biography:
Anne Hannah Golofski on August 3, 1923 in New York City, Anne Klein was a consummate American Designer whose clothes caught on in the U.S. more than anywhere else in the world. She paved the way for other females in the fashion industry with her launch of Junior Sophisticates in 1948 at just 25 years old. It wouldn't be until 1968 that she finally launched her fashion company - Anne Klein and Co.
Anne Klein's chic aesthetic and focus on many separates were unique at a time when women were supposed to wear mostly dresses. Her apparel could all be mixed and matched with a decidedly chic urban appeal.
Anne Klein Commerical Success:
By the time Anne Klein and Co. was formed, Klein had received numerous awards for her ready-to-wear clothing. Designed for comfort as well as fashion, her separates were an immediate hit because they dared to give a woman what she needed instead of what some out-of-touch designers thought they wanted. Her early success with Junior Sophisticates launched her career and empire that continues to thrive to this day.
Anne Klein's Death:
Anne Klein succumbed to breast cancer on March 19, 1974, leaving her company reeling. After several financial hardships and multiple owners, designer Donna Karan took over the label. She restored the brand its former glory before leaving to start her own label, DKNY. Anne Klein and Co. lives on today with new owners and leadership that are inspired by the vision and spirit of the woman herself.
Anne Klein and Co. Today:
Since fall of 2007, Cuban-born designer Isabel Toledo has been at the helm at Anne Klein as the company makes a surge to go upscale and get back a solidified identity. In additional to evening gowns, pantsuits, trousers, coats and sweaters, the Anne Klein label offers wonderful shoes, handbags, jewelry, sunglasses, scarves and other accessories.
