Alexander McQueen Biography:

Born as the son of a taxi cab driver in London in 1969, McQueen’s interest in fashion started at an early age. He had the opportunity to help his three sisters design their dresses, and it was not long before the future designer had decided he had found his calling.

At the age of 16, McQueen landed an apprenticeship with Anderson & Sheppard, tailors for Savile Row.

Alexander McQueen in Fashion:

During his apprenticeship at Anderson & Sheppard, his clients included the likes of Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles. McQueen went on to work with Angels and Bermans before moving to Milan at 20 years old for a brief period to work under Romeo Gigli.

Following his stint in Italy, McQueen applied to work at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where the headmaster soon encouraged the young McQueen to apply as a full-time student. Upon receiving his Master’s Degree, his thesis collection was purchased upon its merit by fashion stylist Isabella Blow – an unusual feat.

Alexander McQueen's Rise:

McQueen’s early collections were to set the course for the tone of McQueen’s career. Featuring shocking and taboo style elements, his designs were perhaps justly berated by some for their insensitivity and even immorality. Nevertheless Givenchy had enough confidence in the natural talent of McQueen to name him their head designer in 1996.

Alexander McQueen at Givenchy:

During his five-year tenure with Givenchy, McQueen continued to pursue his unusual designs, which landed him pointed criticism and eventually cost him his position in 2001. Nevertheless, he was lauded by many, receiving the British Designer of the Year award four times. He was also named International Fashion Designer of the Year during this period.
